Banner filter item properties window

This window shows properties of a single banner filter. It is used both for entry of new banner filters and for editing them. See Understanding banner filters for background information on banner filters. See How to block banners? and How to unblock banners? to learn more about banner blocking and unblocking and other ways of banner filters management.

This window can be opened from Banner filters tab when entering a new filter or editing a filter.

Following fields are available:

  • "Address" - address mask. This filter can be matched only if resource address matches this mask. Note that "Apply mask to" field influence on how this field is interpreted. See Understanding masks for information on mask syntax;

  • "Apply mask to" - instruction on how to interpret banner address mask. Following choices are available:

    • Host - apply banner address mask to host part of the banner address;
    • Path and Host - apply banner address mask to host and path parts of the banner address;
    • Full address - apply banner address mask to full banner address;
    See Understanding Internet addresses for more information on resource address parts. For examples see Understanding banner filters;
  • "Apply to subdomains as well" option prescribing to apply the entered banner address mask not only to the site but only to its subdomains. This option is available only if host mask is used. For example, if we entered "microsoft.com" in "Address" field and checked this option, the filter can match not only resources from microsoft.com but also from msdn.microsoft.com, support.microsoft.com, and so on;
  • "Content type is" - mask of the resource content type to which to apply the filter. Using this parameter you are able to filter resources by the type of their content. There are following choices offered:

    • "*" - all content types (applies to all resources regardless of their type);

    • "application/*" - the "application" content type is to be used for discrete data which do not fit in any of the other categories, and particularly for data to be processed by some type of application program. This is information which must be processed by an application before it is viewable or usable by a user. This includes Flash animations, PDF documents and other binary files;

    • "audio/" -  content type of "audio" indicates that the resource contains audio data;

    • "image/" - content type of "image" indicates that the resource contains an image;

    • "text/" - the "text" content type is intended for sending material which is principally textual in form. This includes widely spread HTML and plain text documents;

    • "video/" - content type of "video" indicates that the resource contains a time-varying-picture image, possibly with color and coordinated sound. This includes video films and other video material;

    You may enter another content type mask in this field. For example, to make the filter match only plain text documents enter "text/plain", PDF documents - "application/pdf", etc. Content types of documents and resources in cache may be viewed in Resource properties window. See Understanding masks for information on content type mask syntax;
  • "Resource size is" - allows to apply a filter only to resources with certain sizes. There are two size fields:

    • "from" - minimum size a resource must have in order to match this filter. If this field is left empty, no minimal size restriction is enforced;

    • "to" - maximum size a resource must have in order to match this filter. If this field is left empty, no maximum size restriction is enforced;

    To apply this filter to resources having specified size range, fill in both these fields.
  • "Action" -  specifies filter type denoting what to do with a resource matching this filter. There are two types of filters:
    • "Reject" - specifies disabling filter. When a resource matches this filter, it is disabled and rejected by Ad Annihilator filtering mechanism. Disabled resources are not downloaded and shown on web pages when you browse;
    • "Accept" - specifies enabling filter. When a resource matches this filter, it is enabled and accepted by Ad Annihilator filtering mechanism. Enabled resources are downloaded and shown on web pages when you browse;
    Note that if a filter contains a subfilter, the final decision on resource acceptance or rejection is made based on child filter nodes. See Understanding banner filters for more information;
  • "Enabled" - when checked, the filter is active and participates in banner filtering; if unchecked, the filter is disabled and has no effect on banner filtering. Uncheck this option for those filters you wish to disable temporarily.

A resource is considered matching a filter if all of the following is true:

  1. Resource address matches filter address mask (with regard to "Apply mask to" and "Apply to subdomains as well" fields)
  2. Resource content type matches filter content type mask (in advanced mode only);
  3. Resource size is within the filter size limits (in advanced mode only)

Otherwise, it is considered that the resource does not match the filter.
