Ads on the web
In general, advertisements on the web could be categorized by type and by
source.
Types of advertisements
Differentiating by type following advertisement types can be distinguished:
- Banners (special areas inside the web pages where
advertisements are placed);
- Pop-up windows (separate browser windows with
advertisements popping up without user's leave).
There are several variations of this categorization. In most occasions, there
is no need to know them to struggle with ads. The only thing to do to block an
ad is to point to it with a mouse and instruct Ad Annihilator to block it (see
How to block banners? for more details).
But in rare occasions it is necessary to understand these subtleties. For
example, banners may appear as:
- Pictures that are loaded as regular images using an
IMG HTML tag;
- Frame advertisements loaded in IFRAME or FRAME HTML
tags;
- Flash advertisements.
Ad Annihilator efficiently fights with each of
aforementioned type of advertisements.
Sources of advertisements
Advertisements come either from the same site on which they appear or from
another site. We'll refer to them as first-party resources and third-party
resources respectively. The latter case is much more frequent and many sites
show advertisements from advertiser sites. It is the fact that advertisements
usually come from specific advertiser sites that Ad Annihilator is capable of
filtering out banners and popups.
